Abstract
“Land Reform” to Food Insecurity Before the end of the year Zimbabwe will probably suffer from a record food crisis thanks to the poor harvest last Spring. Although the whole South African region experienced various degrees of drought during the last agricultural season, the main driver behind this tragedy is the economic policy of Robert Mugabe’s regime during the last ten years. In particular the “fast track” land reform launched in February 2000 without adequate preparations and for the sake of political expediency had a severe impact on the agricultural output. It created chaos in the industry and upset the traditional coping mechanisms for fighting famine. The growing economic disintegration and the financial crisis in Zimbabwe preclude a come back to the normal with or without good rains early next year.
